Identify Need
The need for a family support group may be identified in a number of ways including, a community drugs project worker through their contacts in work or by a family member who needs to talk and share with others in a similar situation. A group must start somewhere and someone must take the first step.

What do you want to set-up?
Family Support Service/Family Support Group?

Preliminary Work Engage in research

  • Contact the Family Support Network to inform them of your intentions and to source advice and information
  • Visit other Family Support Groups and source information from these groups

For example;

  • 1. How do the parents benefit from going to the group?
  • 2. What is working within the group for example relaxation techniques, educational inputs, information exchange, peer support?
  • 3. What services do members of the group use to support them in coping with drug use within the family?
  • 4. How did members of the group find about the group?
  • 5. What attracted them to joining the group?
  • 6. What would encourage other parents to join the group?
  • 7. How often does the group meet?
  • 8. Do people take turns to facilitate the group?
  • 9. Do members of the group have facilitation skills?

  • Are there issues for family members that are specific to the local area, for example housing is a big issue in the North Inner City?
