NATIONAL FAMILY SUPPORT NETWORKSUPPORTING FAMILY MEMBERS LIVING WITH SUBSTANCE MISUSE

World First as NFSN Celebrate the Roll Out of a Self Sufficient 5-Step Method Framework in Ireland

The framework for the highly successful 5-Step Method which helps families dealing with issues of substance misuse will see hundreds of workers and volunteers trained, assessed and accredited to practice the 5-Step Method.

The National Family Support Network (NFSN) is excited to announce the launch of a self-sufficient 5-Step Method framework at Ireland’s first ever 5-Step Method Conference to be held this November. The conference will take place on Tuesday the 11th of November 2014 in the Hogan Mezzanine Suite of the Croke Park Conference Centre in Dublin. It will feature a key note speech from Professor Richard Velleman, one of the key academics and clinicians who developed the 5-Step Method and he will outline how the new Irish Training Programme for the 5-Step Method is a self-sufficient, low cost and high quality system. Other speakers such as Gary McMichael and Ed Sipler will present on their adaptation of the 5-Step Method for use with children living with parental substance misuse and/or mental health difficulties in Northern Ireland.

What is the 5 Step Method? - Background

The 5 Step Method is a brief psychosocial intervention to support family members who have a close relative with an alcohol or drug problem. Evaluations of the 5-Step Method have shown a reduction in the strain experienced by family members living in these situations. This intervention can also have a positive knock-on effect on other family members including children in the family and the drug or alcohol using relative.

NFSN Development Worker Megan O’Leary is now Ireland’s first assessor of 5-Step Method practice and she believes it is an essential intervention when it comes to helping families dealing with issues of substance misuse;

“The 5 Step Method was developed in the UK by the Addiction and the Family International Network after it was discovered that the needs of families experiencing problematic drug and alcohol use were largely misunderstood and ignored. The National Family Support Network has already trained 110 workers and volunteers to use the 5-Step Method. The Network now strongly believes that family members who are experiencing crisis situations can gain significant support and a reduction in stress through the implementation of the 5-Step Method throughout Ireland”.
